- Wash your hair 4-24 hours before you take the sample.
- Use a regular shampoo. Don’t use a medicated shampoo. Note: Hair can’t be dyed because that affects the mineral readings.
- We prefer scalp hair. We accept chest hair or pubic hair only under exceptional circumstances.
- Use a stainless steel scissor to cut the hair. You can get a family member or your barber/hairstylist to take your sample.
- Cut as close to the scalp as possible. Cut from 3-5 spots from anywhere across your scalp. For retests, it's recommended you cut from the same spots.
- Keep the hair that’s about 1 inch closest to the scalp. Discard the rest.
- The total amount of hair should completely fill up a dessert spoon. When in doubt, err on the side of sending more hair and not less.
- Put the collected hair in a small/mini envelope. Use a paper envelope, and not a plastic pouch/bag.
- Put the small envelope in a bigger envelope.
- Do not sellotape or staple the mini envelope. You can, however, seal the bigger envelope with a stapler.
